How Do I Make Authentic Homemade Mexican Horchata?
Here’s the simple steps you’ll follow to make this drink (scroll down for the full recipe):
- In the blender, place 2 cups of water and the rice, blend for 30 seconds.
- In a large bowl, combine the rest of the water, the rice mixture, sugar, and the cinnamon sticks, and stir well.
- Allow this mixture to soak for at least 3 hours, or overnight.
- Stir in the milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
- Remove the cinnamon sticks.
- Strain the mixture through a fine strainer or cheese clothe or other clothe that will allow the liquid to run through.
- Then you can stir it well and place in the refrigerator to chill, or add the mixture to ice.

I have never used it before, but what if you tried to 1/2 the recipe. That way you won’t be wasting as many ingredients if you don’t care for it. I don’t know why it wouldn’t work! What I would do, is prepare the rice as directed on the package then let it cool completely. Then follow the rest of the recipe! Best of luck.

Yes, I do set it in the refrigerator. I like to chill it then serve it over ice.
