Welcome to our air fryer stuffed hamburgers recipe.

My first stuffed hamburgers memory was frozen ones that my dad cooked for me on the barbecue when we went camping in our motorhome.

I used to love the grocery shopping trip on route to our camping adventure. It would be in Morrisons which back then was Safeway’s and I would be stocked up on pink lemonade and stuffed hamburgers.

Though being British they would be called stuffed cheeseburgers, or my mum would say “Samantha would you like those burgers with cheese in the middle?”

Obviously, I always jumped for joy at the thought of them as they were so yummy.

Fast forward about 25 years and I am watching an episode of Man Vs Food with Dominic & Kyle.

In this show the guy eats a lot of typical man food as well as doing those crazy competitions where he must eat x amount of something for a pat on the back.

In this episode of Man Vs Food, you watch a Juicy Lucy being made and the guy stuffing his face with it once it is cooked.

It made a change from the usual episodes of him eating 60 chicken wings with super hot sauce on it.

It made me crave a Juicy Lucy even though I had not heard of a Juicy Lucy until this moment.

I just wish I could eat it there and then and a couple of days later I am begging Dominic to make me one. He does and it is stunning, and this is that very recipe.

Tweaked a bit over the years, but still a delicious take on the stuffed hamburger in the air fryer with a Juicy Lucy twist.

What Is A Juicy Lucy?

A Juicy Lucy is just a popular American name for stuffed hamburgers or stuffed burgers.

You mix the ingredients to make a hamburger patty and then load it with a secret stash of cheese in the middle.

Then when you cut into your hamburger you have this whoosh of melted cheese that falls out.

Its like the best stuffed burger you will ever have the pleasure of trying. Perfect for cheese lovers and is a close second to our air fryer baked brie as one of the best uses of cheese in the air fryer.

How To Make A Juicy Lucy Burger?

Cooking a Juicy Lucy burger is not that different to a regular hamburger. You would make your own hamburger patties as usual and then using a biscuit cutter, cut them in batches of two.

Batch 1 is your bottom hamburger patty and batch 2 is your top patty.

The cheese is loaded onto the top of the bottom layer, you put the top layer of hamburger over it and then make sure all your edges are secure.

After all, you do not want lots of cheese disappearing out of your stuffed hamburger before you are ready to eat it.

There is nothing worse than your cheese escaping into the bottom of the air fryer, or having the cheese stuck to the air fryer basket for you to clean later.

Dominic’s Cheese Stuffed Burgers In Air Fryer

What makes Dominic’s cheese stuffed burgers in the air fryer so AMAZING is that he uses three types of cheese when stuffing the burgers.

  • Philadelphia Soft Cheese
  • Grated Cheddar Cheese
  • Sliced Cheddar Cheese

By using a cheese like cheddar, it is not stringy compared to making a stuffed burger with mozzarella or gouda. It then helps for when you cut into the burger once cooked as it the cheese flows like you would expect in a restaurant.

Then once you have loaded the cheese in like you see here:

You fold the sliced cheddar cheese over the two other cheeses:

This creates a cheese section and stops the soft cheese from leaking out during the cooking process.

You then cover the top burger patty over the bottom burger patty and using your hands seal the sides of the burger.

It is now ready for the air fryer and its only the cheese stuffing that is really that different compared to cooking regular air fryer hamburgers.

Air Fryer Stuffed Burgers Cook Time

Another slight variation compared to our air fryer cheeseburgers or our air fryer hamburgers is that the cooking time is slightly longer.

This is because you are cooking a much bigger burger and therefore it requires a 15 minute cook time.

Instructions

  • Peel and dice your onion and load it into a mixing bowl with the rest of your burger patty ingredients. Mix well.

  • Use a biscuit cutter to cut into burger shapes. Making sure you have 4 top patties and 4 bottom patties. Adjust the size if you need to.

  • Add your burger patty shapes onto a chopping board. Carefully add a slice of cheddar, soft cheese, and grated cheddar to the top of your bottom patties. Fold over the sliced cheddar so that it creates a secure covering for the other cheese and so the cheese will not leak out.

  • Place the top hamburger patty over it and using your thumb seal the sides of the patties.

  • Load into the air fryer basket and cook for 15 minutes at 180c/360f.

  • Load your burger up but without the bun lid and cook for a further 1 minute with extra cheese.

  • Load the top burger bun over it and serve.

Notes

Take your time to secure the sides of your hamburger. Otherwise you will have cheese leaking out and it will spoil your stuffed hamburger experience. This is how ours looked when we cut into it:

You can use any mince. I prefer beef or beef and pork mixed. Chicken and turkey or veal also works well.

Remember to slice your onion thin. Otherwise you will end up with big chunks of onion when you take a bite of your stuffed hamburger.

I also added garnish and barbecue sauce to my stuffed burger, you can add whatever you like.
