Welcome to the 60th Edition of the Open Tech Roles newsletter. This newsletter covers open technology roles as of March 10th, 2019 and technology appointments for past 28 days ending March 10th, 2019.

Titles are evolving and are specializing:

  • The head of technology (IT) role has different titles, historically a CIO, is now either CIO, CTO or Engineering (including CIO role) and a Chief Digital Officer titles (or combinations thereof). Note: sometimes the head of IT is the EVP Tech & Ops with CIO type roots.
  • The CTO role has multiple contexts and meanings: (1) CTOs that manage IT (where the CIO reports in); (2) CTOs that manage the tech infrastructure (a more traditional definition); (3) CTOs - Products/ Tech Strategy. They are essentially tech vendor CTOs and typically manage IT as well, but it is not their primary role or orientation.

  • Medtronic, MN, Jan 2019 - Medtronic CIO Michael Hedges is retiring. We have heard that the role has been filled although no one has been announced yet. Medtronic is a global leader in medical technology, services, and solutions.
  • State Street Global Advisors, MA, Nov 2018 - The Corporate CIO’s role is to provide leadership for developing and implementing business and strategic technology initiatives. The Corporate CIO directs the local planning, prioritization, and implementation of Business and Enterprise IT systems in support of corporate business operations, including end user computing, in order to improve cost effectiveness, service quality, and business mission development.
  • Amplify Credit Union, TX, Feb 2019 - Amplify Credit Union is seeking a SVP-CIO to lead the technological and informational needs of the organization. The SVP-CIO will work closely with the Chief Experience Officer to ensure that the technology we provide provides our members with the best banking experience possible.
  • Ellie Mae, CA, Nov 2018 - Peter Hirsch, EVP, Technology and Operations of the company, left the company effective January 2, 2019. No replacement announced.
  • Ameris Bancorp, GA, Dec 2018 - The company announced the retirement of Joseph B. Kissel, the company’s EVP & CIO, effective as of December 31, 2018.
  • Kinsale Capital Group, VA, Nov 2018 - William J. Kenney, Jr. notified Kinsale Capital Group that he will be stepping down from his current role as SVP & CIO, effective July 1, 2019, and transition to a new part-time consulting role managing critical development projects for the Company as well as other endeavors unrelated to the Company.
  • Spok Holdings, VA, Aug 2018 - Thomas G. Saine, 55, the CIO of Virginia based global leader in healthcare communications Spok Holdings, passed away unexpectedly. Mr. Saine served as CIO of the Company since August 2008, and previously served as the company's CTO, President of GTES, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of the company, VP of Corporate Technical Operations and VP, Technology and Integration.
  • University of Oklahoma, OK, Jun 2017 - David Horton currently serves as interim CIO overseeing information technology at OU's three campuses.
  • Biotest, FL, Jan 2018 - Stuart Kippelman has taken on the temporary role of Interim CIO at the pharmaceutical company.
  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, D.C., Aug 2018 - Beth Killoran, who served as CIO for HHS for the past two years, will help develop a strategic IT plan for the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, shifting roles. HHS CTO Ed Simcox will stand in as acting CIO. The move follows other high-level IT staff departures at the health agency this year, including the loss of former CTO Bruce Greenstein, as well as its CISO.
  • T.D. Williamson, OK, Nov 2018 - The company is seeking a CIO to direct the information systems activities, including systems strategy, design, programming and procedures, and operation of computer and related IT equipment for TDW’s world-wide operation. T. D. Williamson develops and manufactures pipeline equipment and provides services for onshore and offshore applications.

  • AutoNation, FL, Jan 2019 - EVP and CTO, Tom Conophy, will be leaving the Company amid restructuring. The restructuring comes as analysts forecast a dip in U.S. vehicle sales this year. New vehicle sales in the United States are expected to drop as higher interest rates and rising prices could prompt customers to hold off their car-buying plans, the National Automobile Dealers Association said last month.AutoNation, through its subsidiaries, operates as an automotive retailer in the United States.

  • AT&T, TX, Feb 2019 - Pam Parisian, 60, is retiring from AT&T as President of Technology Development. No replacement has been announced yet.
  • Leidos (Defense Group), VA, Mar 2019 - The Leidos Defense Group has an opening for a Group CTO, located in Reston, VA. The CTO will be responsible for overall technical execution to include technical solutions for priority captures, internal research and development (IR&D) projects and technical performance on major programs.
  • Analog Devices, MA, Sept 2018 - Peter Real informed Analog Devices that he was resigning from his position as SVP and CTO of the Company, due to health reasons. Before the CTO role, he was VP, High Speed Products. There is still no announcement on who will replace him.
  • Conformis, MA, Sep 2018 - Daniel Steines, M.D, M.S., CTO, of Conformis, announced his resignation from the company. He will assist the company in transitioning his responsibilities to other executive officers through the date of his departure and will continue to serve as a consultant to the company following his departure.
  • Accelerize, CA, Feb 2018 - Dave Stewart, CTO of Accelerize, resigned from his position.Accelerize Inc. provides software solutions for businesses to enhance their digital advertising spend in the United States, Europe, and internationally.

Data Chiefs

  • Publicis Groupe, France, Jul 2018 - Publicis Groupe chief data officer Jason Kodish announced his resignation. As Chief Data Officer, Kodish has been driving the collective power of the talent within the Data and Analytics practices within the Groupe, working as a leadership team that is uniting a team of more than 3,500 engineers, data scientists, analysts and tech leaders. The company is looking for Kodish's successor.

Security Chiefs/ CISOs

  • Equiniti, UK, Dec 2018 - The UK-based Fin Tech and Business Process Outsourcer is searching for a CISO who will lead the Group Information Security team and is a member of the Group IT Leadership team. This role is essential to the IT and business strategy, by enabling Equiniti to maintain a competitive edge through its robust security management framework.

CIO Roles

  • CVS Health, RI - CVS Health promoted its SVP of client services, Roshan Navagamuwa, to EVP and CIO. Navagamuwa will lead technology operations and innovation, including client services for CVS Caremark. One of his primary responsibilities will involve overseeing integration of the company's IT systems with Aetna's, according to a CVS Health statement. Navagamuwa will partner with Meg McCarthy, the company's EVP of operations and technology. He has served as interim CIO for the last year. In his new role, Navagamuwa will report to Jon Roberts, EVP and COO of CVS Health.
  • Quest Diagnostics, NJ - Quest Diagnostics announced that Gabrielle Wolfson has been named SVP and Chief Information and Digital Officer. She reports directly to Steve Rusckowski, Chairman, President and CEO, and is based at the company's headquarters in Secaucus, N.J. Ms. Wolfson is responsible for leading information technology, data informatics and digital solutions for Quest Diagnostics. These include the company's Quanum suite of healthcare IT solutions and data analytics, myQuest patient mobile app and portal, and digital engagement for the company's 2,200 patient service centers. Wolfson joins Quest Diagnostics from Xerox Corp. where had she served as CIO (CIO) since 2016. Quest Diagnostics Incorporated provides diagnostic testing, information, and services in the United States and internationally.
  • SS&C Technologies Holdings, CT - SS&C Technologies Holdings appointed Joseph Maxwell as Technology Head of SS&C GlobeOp's Hedge Fund Administration group. Joe will lead the company's hedge fund technology and architecture behind the world's #1 fund administration business. Prior to joining SS&C, Joe spent over 12 years at Citco; 8 of which he served as the CIO for the Citco Group of Companies.
  • Standard Insurance Company, OR - Standard Insurance Company reported that John Felton has been hired as the VP of Information Technology Enterprise Services. Felton comes to The Standard after 21 years at Sprint Corp. where he held a variety of roles in the information technology organization, most recently as VP. Standard Insurance Company provides insurance, retirement, and investment products and services.
  • Rent-A-Center, TX - Rent-A-Center and Fred E. Herman mutually agreed that Mr. Herman would resign from his position as EVP - CIO. Mr. Herman’s resignation is a termination without “cause” pursuant to Section 3(a) of the executive transition agreement between Mr. Herman and the Company. Mike Santimaw, previously the Company’s VP of Information Security, Innovation Labs and Corporate Solutions, has been promoted to CIO. Rent-A-Center, together with its subsidiaries, leases household durable goods to customers on a rent-to-own basis.
  • FleetCor Technologies, GA - FLEETCOR Technologies appointed Scott duFour as Global CIO. He will report to Ron Clarke, Chairman and CEO of FLEETCOR. John Reed, FLEETCOR’s CIO since 2013, will be retiring from the position but will assist Scott with the transition until his retirement date. Prior to joining FLEETCOR, Scott held several technology leadership roles at McKesson and was most recently the CIO for McKesson Europe. FleetCor Technologies provides commercial payment solutions.
  • TCF Financial Corp., MN - Chemical Financial Corp. and TCF Financial Corp. reported executive leadership appointments for the combined company. Enterprise CIO and business partner at TCF Financial Corporation Tom Butterfield will become CIO.
  • Carnegie Mellon University, PA - Carnegie Mellon University has appointed Stan Waddell as the new associate VP and CIO. Waddell will serve on the Division of Operations Senior Leadership Team, as well as the University Leadership Council. Previously, Waddell was associate VP and CIO at the University of New Hampshir.
  • Zendesk, CA - Zendesk appointed former Adobe executive Colleen Berube as CIO. Berube joins as CIO, having formerly served as EVP and CTO of Fisher Investments and executive in residence at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Zendesk, a software development company, provides SaaS products for organizations.
  • Shake Shack, NY - Dave Harris has been named as CIO and will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of technology at Shake Shack. Prior to joining Shake Shack, Dave served as VP of Digital Technology at Newell Brands. Shake Shack owns, operates, and licenses Shake Shack restaurants (Shacks) in the United States and internationally.
  • AvidXchange, NC - Angelic Gibson is the company's new CIO. In her role, Gibson now oversees the strategy behind development, operations and technology services. She came on board at AvidXchange in October. Prior to this role, Gibson was a SVP of information technology at TKXS, which offers data solutions to businesses. AvidXchange provides accounts payable and payment automation solutions for midsize companies.
  • Dime Community Bancshares, NY - Dime Community Bancshares appointed Michael J. Fegan as CTO of the organization. Prior to joining Dime, Mr. Fegan served as the Chief Information and Operations Officer of Investors Bank, where he directed the Information Technology, Client Care, PMO, Deposit Services, Cash Management and Loan Servicing functions. Dime Community Bancshares operates as the holding company for Dime Community Bank that provides commercial banking and financial services in New York.
  • Prime Meridian Bank, FL - Monté Ward has been promoted to become the EVP and CIO. Former Information Security Officer/SVP of Bank Operations.
  • Pacific Architects and Engineers, VA - PAE has named James Benton their CIO. Having served as interim CIO since August 2018, the permanent appointment recognizes Benton's contributions during his four-year tenure at PAE.
